Project will provide asset owners with high-quality education, analysis and advice on climate exposure and stewardship activities of passive index managers.
Santa Monica, Calif., November 30, 2020 – Wilshire Associates (“Wilshire”), a diversified global financial services firm, was announced as a recipient of a William and Flora Hewlett Foundation Environmental Program Grant to align passive asset management with the Paris climate goals.
This project will leverage Wilshire’s research and analytical capabilities to provide asset owners with high‐quality education, analysis and advice about the climate exposure and stewardship activities of passive index managers to help them make more climate-informed investment decisions.
“Many asset owners aren’t empowered to integrate climate change into their investment decisions due to a lack of resources and limited access to material climate information. said Daniel E. Ingram, Senior Vice President, Responsible Investing & Consulting at Wilshire Associates. “Thanks to this generous grant from the Hewlett foundation, we can start to democratize climate education by bringing new analytical content to investors about the carbon exposure of passive investments using story-telling techniques, case-studies and videos.”
“We’re aiming to build a coalition of asset owners from across the US, Europe and China that have historically been underrepresented in this space. We’re going to helping these asset owners design more climate‐informed investment policy objectives, seek improved climate disclosures from passive index managers and consider new ways to mass customize lower‐carbon passive investment solutions.”
“Passive investing systemically influences financial flows to carbon intensive industries, which harms people and the planet. But it does not have to be this way,” said Marilyn Waite, program officer of climate and clean energy finance at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation. “We’re proud to support this innovative project from Wilshire, which, in partnership with Matarin Capital, will provide investors with critical education and tools to change the autopilot of passive investing from carbon-intensive to climate-mitigating."
